Using Seventh Sense Self-Service Flow Steps (SSFS) for Batch Emails in Marketo

With Self-Service Flow Steps (SSFS), you can deploy one-off emails using email delivery optimization without leaving Marketo.

In order to use the SSFS capabilities for one-off emails (like newsletters, promotional emails, etc.), you will need both a Batch Campaign and a Trigger Campaign.  The batch campaign is used to identify who you want (or don't want) to receive the mailing, whereas the trigger campaign is used to deliver the email.

Note - In Batch campaigns leads are processed in large batches and run each Flow Step at the same time.  Therefore, Marketo will not allow you to use Date Token Wait Step in batch campaigns as the waiting time is different for each lead.

Create a batch campaign

In the Batch campaign define who you want the recipients of the email to be in the "Smart List" tab.

In the Batch campaign insert a Request campaign step in the "Flow" step tab.

In the Batch campaign navigate to the "Schedule" tab and click "Run once" and enter the date / time you want the mailing to begin.

Create a trigger campaign

In the Trigger campaign's "Smart List" tab, you'll add a "Campaign is Requested" step and the Source "is" "Marketo Flow Action".

In the Trigger campaign's "Flow" tab, you'll add an "Email Delivery Optimization" step.  This is where you'll define the throttling option and the delivery window for the email deployment.

Note - Delivery windows can be as short as one hour to seven days and anything in-between.

You will then need to add a "Wait" step where the "Type" will be a "Date Token".  You will need to manually enter "{{lead.nextOptimalTime}}" into the "End On:" field.

Note - We recommend setting up templates so that you do not need to remember the exact naming convention of this step.

You will then add a "Send Email" step underneath the "Wait" step with the email you want to send.

Your completed flow will look like the below.

Note - You can add additional choices similar to any other mailing.

You will then need to activate your campaign.
